Most of us think of Independence Day as the Fourth of July, but 3-year-old Ashlynn celebrates increased independence everyday at The Children's Center. About a year ago Ashlynn came to The Children's Center after experiencing a severe traumatic brain injury. When she first came to The Center, Ashlynn was able to breathe on her own, but was totally dependent on nurses, therapists, and family to do everything else for her. In young children the brain continues to develop new brain cells and cell connections. Therapists at The Children's Center plan and implement interventions designed specifically to stimulate and promote brain cell development. Initially Ashlynn was not able to actively participate in therapy due to some vision limitations and other challenges, but with time and improvement in her medical status, her sweet disposition and quick smile touched everyone who met her. Ashlynn's days start early with breakfast as part of a special feeding program, teeth brushing, hair brushing, clothing selection, and dressing. Ashlynn participates in these activities as part of a group with other toddlers. At first, most of these daily activities were accomplished with total support from nurses and therapists. However, within the last six months, things have been changing dramatically for Ashlynn and each day brings with it greater independence.
