What happens when you ask 13 3rd, 4th and 5th graders with disabilities to partake in an art project? A lot of fun, lots of studying and a remarkable quilt. Students in the Cdc (Comprehensive amelioration Classroom) class created a quilt depicting the six pillars of character. The quilt was created with the customary goal of re-enforcing the semester-long classroom consulation about trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

The students participated in every aspect of production the quilt.

Day one: They measured and cut the fabric. (Freezer paper was adhered to the back of the fabric to make it easier to handle.)

Day two: The students drew pictures with permanent fabric markers, representing the varied character traits.

Day three: The pillars were labeled and the sewing began. Students were given the occasion to operate the sewing machine and the iron.

Day four: The quilt top was completed and basted.

Day five: The students tied the quilt and embellished it with found objects. The closed quilt will be hung in the main hall of the school for the enjoyment of all the students and staff.

The children's diagnoses included Cp, optic impairment, and Autism. Iep goals for this scheme were varied. They included motor skills like fine motor coordination, writing, drawing, tying knots, and use of scissors. Cognitive skills included following directions, information retention, math, reading, spelling, communication, and concentration span. Emotional skills included patience, pride, sharing, turn taking, dealing with program changes, and trying a novel activity. Supplementary skills were learned when the students present the quilt over the school's close-circuit Tv. They also wrote and graphic a group article about their experience.

The residency was sponsored straight through a grant by the Vsa Foundation, which provides accessible art opportunities to students with disabilities. There was also local preserve from two quilt shops and a quilting guild for this project.

(I wrote this article for first publication in enlarge for Occupational Therapy Practitioners.)
